Every year Kent RaG takes part in campaigns where the aim is to not only raise money for worthy causes but to also raise awareness for a cause we believe deserves to be talked about. These differ year on year with our Campaigns Officer leading the cause and working with the rest of committee, other society and team committees and Kent Union itself to create campaigns that create lasting impacts. Our Campaigns Officer this year is Jess Oborne and we cannot wait to see what campaigns we put on this year.
Environmental October
Evolving from our campaign Oceans October last year comes Environmental October. This year we broaden our campaign to look at the environment as a whole and ways we can do better. The whole campaign is fundraising for the Rainforest Trust UK.
We have a few ways people can get involved. Firstly, we are encouraging everyone who can to take part in the 1 Million Letters Campaign. This campaign seeks to make it possible for students to save the rainforest simply by writing a letter, regardless of their ability to raise or donate money and anyone under 26 can take part. If you want to be involved then head to the link here and write a letter about why we should protect our last wild places. Partners will match every letter with $3 toward the world’s first youth-funded reserve in Ecuador. The letters will then be brought to the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity, so world leaders hear what you have to say!
Another way you could be involved is by entering our photo competition. This competition involved sending in a photoof nature that could have been taken at any time as long as it was taken by you. So could be a photo of a sunset two years ago or the falling leaves this morning - its up to you!
To enter simply:
Donate £2 to Rainforest Trust UK here and include in the additional comments at the end 'Kent RaG Photo Competition - (your name you're entering with)'
Email your photo to kentragcampaigns@gmail.com with your name (matching the one in the additional comments box on the donation) and a title for the photo (just something for us to be able to call it). Feel free to include when and where it was taken as well.
The competition will close at 12pm on 25th October and the winner will be announced on 31st October.
The judges will be:
Rainforest Trust Executive Director - Chris (Head Judge)
Rainforest Trust Fundraising Manager - Vicky
Kent RaG President - Lizzie
Kent RaG Campaigns Officer - Jess
We will also be sharing facts and other information about the environment and the Rainforest Trust UK this month and hosting some other fundraising events. So, follow us on social media to join in.
Movember
Year on year, there is always one campaign that takes place and that is our beloved Movember! Movember is an annual event taking place throughout November which involves raising money and awareness for men’s health through the growing of moustaches mainly but also other events. These men’s health issues include prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s suicide and mental health. The University of Kent works hard on this campaign with many teams and societies across our campus getting involved including ourselves. We run two annual events which are the Hot Wings Challenge at Woodys on campus and a Movember Quiz which takes place at Tokyo Tearooms. In 2019/2020, Kent RaG raised £837.72 for this cause through these two events and two of our committee members growing some beautiful moustaches. We were awarded by the UKC Movember Committee Best Night Event for our Hot Wings Challenge and Best Group Fundraiser for the huge amount of money we raised.
If you are a charity that would like us to consider running an event or campaign in aid of then look out for when our charity applications open again at the link here.
